While listening to an old favourite of mine (C-Quence - Endorphine (Original Mix)) I got a gnawing suspicion that movies have become alot more important to me the last year(s). From watching around 0-2 movies a month, I’m now at up to 3 per week, and I travel all the way to Bergen to catch a good one with friends. What changed from the days of yore? Availability and cost.
There’s no way in hell I’d ever be willing to pay for shit like The Dark is Rising, so years ago that kind of stuff would be unavailable for me until it came to the TV, or a friend getting it on VHS/DVD, and the chances of me catching it there were so slim it makes supermodels look fat. I blame the internet. Also that I watch TV about 2 hours a month, and that’s all by accident. Too many commercials, too much irrelevant content, and having to be there when it shows. I mean, I hated TV before the internet and computers arrived at our house, so you can figure the relief when it showed up.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I could stream apple.com/trailers with ease, and I could check out the movies I wanted to see far in advance, even get a glimpse of some of the movies that I’ve missed out on! Enough babble, here continues the list of movies that I’m bouncy about seeing in 2008
The Incredible Hulk looks like a reboot of the movie-franchise, throwing off the angsty drama that Ang(st) Lee made in 2003, to make a new version that’s got more action and less emo. This time it’s got Edward Norton (who’s really cool), and Tim Roth (who can be oh so creepy…) among it’s cast. They’ll be duking it out in New York City, and if you’re a comic-fan like me, you’ll probably join me in anticipation about seeing HULK SMASH! New York City like it’s been a million times before - it never gets old!
The Dark Knight promises to be another smash hit like the previous movie. This time the Joker is creepy as fuck, scary as hell, awesome as few (who’d a thunk that nancy-boy Heath Ledger could be awesome like that?), and we’ve got the usual cool people from the previous movie. Even though I generally don’t like the DC universe (DC Comics) in particular I loved Batman Begins and what they did for the character there. He’s not an emo whiny sap that looks like he’s moments from going all ‘Spiderman 3′-goth on our asses to ruin the whole thing. Let’s hope that continues in this one.
The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian has a promising trailer. So promising in fact, I’m ready to forgive the slightly boring events of the first one. The prince himself looks badass, and I hope he is. If they manage to make the movie a tad darker (Narnia’s drowning in evil, IT’S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE CHEERY BEAVERS AND CHEERY FAUNS! >:|) it might work out neatly!
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull… dude’n dudettes… it’s Indiana Jones! No further reasons needed.
The Mutant Chronicles is a sci-fi where you’ve got “an army of underworld NecroMutants” to kick the shit out of, John Malkovich and Ron Perlman. w00t!
So anyways, it’s an american about to save the world from the meanies. What else is new.
The Spiderwick Chronicles is another shot at picking up where Harry Potter left off. Or LotR. Take your pick of the fantasy-franchises, it’s trying to fill a void. I don’t mind that they do, I just hope it’s done well, unlike certain other movies…
If I disregard the whole “OMG I HAVE BAD MEMORIES”, and move on in my life, I’ll have to point out that this movie looks creepy and awesome.
Babylon A.D. has Vin Diesel, which is awesome enough in itself, and it’s a new sci-fi! The cast’s got a lot of cool people that we’re familiar with from other movies, a generic-seeming plot where the hero escorts the lady through rough terrain and through alot of badguys showing us lots of action, not to mention… no, I think that was it. What can go wrong?
Cloverfield is a hyped, overhyped, and superhyped monster-movie from producer J.J. Abrams (Armageddon, you know, the effect-filled piece of junk with cool music, awesome shots, Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler and ex-cool Affleck). I hope it lives up to the hype, because I’m … well… hyped.
Sweeney Todd has Johnny Depp. Dudes’n dudettes, it’s Johnny Depp! Just that makes it worthwhile to watch. If you need another carrot: It’s directed by Tim Burton. That’s not enough for you to go bananas about it?! It’s got Alan Rickman, our favourite sleazeball (<3), and Sacha Baron Cohen... come on... not hyped yet? Allright, it's got Helena Bonham Carter, and it's based around the concept of 'Dark Humour'. Now bugger off and be hyped about!
In the Name of the King is so cheesy, so wannabe, so impossibly Uwe Boll-directed I can feel the ooze all the way to Norway ( Way - Norway, get it?). By now I bet everyone knows I’m terribly fond of cheese, and especially the good ones, so I hereby announce that I’m so gonna see it.
Wanted is an odd one. A really odd one. On the one hand it looks like a quality movie that will blow me away because it’s pure, unadulterated entertainment. On the other hand it smells of cheese, old, rank, and bad cheese - the kind I’m not too keen on smelling, definately not eating. With the cast they’ve gathered for it, and the director (Timur Bekmambetov - Night Watch movies. If you haven’t seen those you’ve missed out on something truly amazing, and should be ashamed of yourself, hide in a corner, and plot the course to the nearest copies) has proven his ability to make gritty and dark movies before, so I’ll be hyped, albeit with a healthy dose of scepticism. Who’m I kidding? Hyped!
Speed Racer is the Wachowski brothers latest project, you know, from the minds behind the Matrix trilogy (I liked the second and third movies too, so there! …though not as good as the first… though Persephone was beyond awesome). Judging by the trailer it looks like they’re trying to bring anime to the “real screen”. I’ll once again announce myself sceptical, but highly intrigued. Hyped…
I know that Sweeney Todd came out in 2007, but it’s not here yet, so it’s more like a 2008 movie, and… cheery beavers… so wrong… but so right…
Right now I’m going to check out the movies based on Philip K. Dick’s books, among them Minority Report, Blade Runner and Total Recall that we should be somewhat familiar with. I’ve seen all of them before, so I’m a bit excited about seeing that all those movies that I liked has a common denominator.
Oh, and second-last, but not least, I’m curious about your movies
Damn this is a long post….
