BoxTorrents Gone, Long Live BakaBT

Edit: Box has released a statement, and he’s being pretty awesome about the whole coup! Kudos for such a diplomatic response! And furthermore, serious kudos to Malus and Jarudin for such a smooth move. It was amazingly professional. Ach, if all revolutions were as smooth and painless as this…

Looking for Boxtorrents.com? This is what you’d find.

This is what greeted me today after a longer downtime that made me slightly panicky

This is what greeted me today

For years and years now this site has been my one stop shop for almost everything anime and manga. I’ve left my computer on to seed for other people for countless of hours, and it’s been one of the mainstays in my life after I discovered it. An explanation has been posted here. The crux of the matter is this part:

[Box was evasive about donations]…curiosity got the best of us, and so Jarudin wrote a script to get an idea of just how much money we were getting from donations. Note that this was based entirely on how much upload credit donators have gotten, since we have no access to the Paypal account the donations went to. When Jarudin and I saw the results, we were shocked, to say the least. We won’t say how much exactly, but let’s just say that based on the numbers (after double/triple/quadruple-checking the numbers, even adding them up manually), we haven’t really needed any donations to keep the site operaable for a long time now.

Box has always been one of the symbols of altruism on the internet for me. Seems that money can bite anyone in the ass and make them less altruistic. Regardless of the actual truth of this I have every confidence in Jarudin and Malus, they’ve done an insanely good job on BoxTorrents the last years, and from everything I’ve seen these years Box hasn’t been active at all, and thus I’m not too fussed anymore.

BoxTorrents has been replaced with the new BakaBT.com.

Wow, this was certainly a surprise. I had no idea all this was going on! I was used to going to BoxTorrents at least once a week. Because it seemed they had the stuff that no one else on the Internets had. They were kind of like Wal-Mart as far as anime torrents would go. Especially with AnimeYume.org now becoming a distant memory, there was really no place else where you could get hard-to-find OST’s, OVA’s, series, doramas, movies, artbooks. . .etc.
Malus and Jarudin, thank you for all your hard work with the old BT. And I will continue to support BakaBT, and be a faithful once-a-week visitor like in the old.

Guys, you can re-use your boxtorrents accounts on bakabt.com. I am using my old boxtorrents account on bakabt and it works.

I respect their decision, but seriously, they should have picked a better name. They only want the best of the best torrent quality, then they go and pick the name “BakaBT” which means “Stupid Torrents”. What were they thinking? They should have named it MaJaTorrents or something of the sort (Since Malus and Jarudin created that new site after all)

Hey dude who wrote this piece. You seem to have come to the conclusion that Box is guilty. I find it incredibly amusing how easily people’s minds are swayed. The fact is that we have nothing to go on but the word of two folks who, if I’m being fairly honest, appear to have taken the site out from under Box in order to get in on the supposed fat loot that Box was alleged to have stolen.

These tools offer absolutely no solid proof that Box did anything wrong. In fact all they did was reference the existence of some “script” that allowed them to suss this all out, when for all they know the funds could be sitting in Box’s Paypal account, awaiting such a time as they’ll be needed.

While I likewise have no proof that these clowns stole the site for less than altruistic purposes, I have an uncanny ability to see through bullshit. I have a very strong feeling that the greedy parties are the ones that stole Box’s legacy out from under him.

Hmn. Just read the link you posted, and I wonder if this isn’t all just a huge publicity stunt. One way or the other, things don’t add up here. Box was way too genial for someone who had his legacy stolen out from under him, and the staff seemed all too eager to let him have his say. It was all a little too nicey-nice for any of it to ring true to me.

I have to agree with Cyberxion. Box never seemed like the sort to do that.

This is a blatant theft of a community by some staffers. In reality there could be legal actions that could be taken if Box so chose. While the staffers had a right to change the Boxtorrents site for the benefit of that site; they illegally stole information that belonged to Boxtorrents. Then used that information to start their own site.

I would support Box if he chose to take legal action against the staffers.

I don’t think he could take legal action, they did not steal the domain and he had nothing to do with the site, or its layout for years. He was just the person funding the domain. The uploads were not by him, they were uploaded by the community. They put the money into running their own domain and took the sites design and community, which, arguably, was created by them.
